Chemical-Free Is Nonsense
The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it. * A common phrase I hear nearly every day is "chemical-free". There is no such thing as "chemical-free". Chemicals are everywhere and make up everything. We were all taught this in high school chemistry class (if we can remember). * You might ask, how about natural products? They also consist of chemicals and scientist will continue to try and replicate some of these chemicals found in nature. But beware that not all natural occurring chemicals are safe. Remember when you were younger and your parents told you to not eat wild mushrooms because some of them are poisonous? That's just one example. ;) * So, what do people mean when they say 'chemical-free'? They are actually referring to non man-made substances and/or natural ingredients/products. There has been a fear regarding some man-made chemicals in our food/cosmetic/cleaning industries and the potential long term health affect associated with exposure to certain chemicals. Having said this, many people have become scared about consuming these chemicals (and other chemicals) as well as the absorption of these chemicals (and other chemicals) through their skin. Of course, this is a normal reaction from the public. * One thing everyone should remember is that "the dose makes the poison". Apple seeds contain amygdalin. Pears contain formaldehyde. And potatoes contain solanine. But all of these naturally occurring toxic chemicals (toxic to humans) are in low dosages and are not considered harmful upon our consumption of them. So, of course, you will continue to eat these foods. * Please note, this post is meant to be for general knowledge and not an opinion post. I am a chemist who wants to educate people. I am not here to tell you to expose yourself to more synthetic chemicals but instead make you more aware of what you are saying and that 'natural' does not mean safe. Don't be fooled by the word 'natural' because it's a term that isn't regulated and companies can get away with calling many things 'natural'.
